Accidental Payment TO HMRC...Oh My Goodness

Oh please let me rant about HMRC's procedures.....
Last week I transferred £3k into my son's bank account, only I pressed the wrong box and sent it to HMRC!!! When I realised I'd done this, I rang them and finally spoke to a human (after listening to the recorded voice telling me how good their website is). Anyway, they can't even begin to issue a refund until the money has been in their account for 30 days.
How disgraceful is that? If we are one day late paying them, they slap a huge penalty on, but when something like this happens, they have their own rules that cannot be changed. After 30 days they will then send a cheque. Why could they not have just reversed the payment to the account it had come from in the first place?
I am furious (with myself for being so stupid in the first place) and with HMRC for being a law unto themselves. GGGGRRRRRRRRRRRR:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

Before people predictably come along to admonish you for your mistake and frustration, can I just ask that next time, please accidentally transfer the money to ME instead. Many thanks!
In all seriousness, keep on at them and good luck.0 -

You need to calm down.
It was you who made the mistake. You didn't read several screens and transferred to an incorrect account. HMRC have several offices and your refund has to go to central accounts to be checked and authorised, this takes time and effort and you should actually be thankful they're not charging you an admin fee for doing so.
Be thankfiul you sent it to them and not someone who simply ignores your requests to return it and treats it as a gift.0 -
can't the bank stop the payment?just in case you need to know:

No.
A bank will only stop a bank transfer if it was a fraudulent transaction otherwise it would make accepting payments this way a minefield for sellers.
All you would need to do is buy a nice expensive item (such as a car), pay the seller using a bank transfer then a few minutes after driving away, call the bank and ask them to stop the payment.0 -
I feel your rage Mumcoll:mad: Its so easy to blip the wrong account.
Like Sm1ler said thank goodness it was to a business that will do the honourable thing.
Lesson learned I guess;)0 -
All a bank can do is ask the recipients bank, who then ask their customer to return the money. But the recipient is under no legal obligation to do so.0

I feel for you and it is very easy to make a mistake with internet banking nowadays
but.....
You and many other people have to understand the nature of the nation state we live in. Basically the government are the guys with the biggest guns and so they can come and take what they what from you. This has been legislated and so it is called taxes.
Many people don't under stand this but it is the basis of how our county works.
As they are the biggest gangsters in the room if you accidentally send them money. Then tough we will take our time in sending the money back if at all, got a problem with that? What you going to do?
You will be lucky to see your money in three months they will delay and procrastinate0 -
