Ebay - item sent after payment refunded by ebay

Am hoping someone can help with this one as I've never had this happen before!

I brought a puppy tag on ebay which wasn't sent and the seller didn't respond to my message. So I opened a case via ebay which I won this morning and was refunded.

Then about an hour later I received an email from ebay saying the item was dispatched and to pay as soon as possible.

I contacted ebay via live chat and was told to contact the seller again telling him I don't want the item any more as he didn't send it prior to me opening the case and to advise him to cancel the transaction.

However ebay say if he has sent the tag out I will have to return it to him, which given I don't trust him at all I will have to send recorded which will cost probably not much more than paying for the tag in the first place.

Obviously I don't need the dog tag now as I brought one from a shop once I 'knew' it wasn't going to be sent out. Can he just send it me anyway and me have to pay to return it? (which is what he has done).

Any help much appreciated.

If the Tag arrives, email the seller and ask for return postage or for them to send a stamped address envelope and it will be returned.
More than likely they will not bother, it being a cheap item.

Good idea thanks :) And if they don't respond (which they probably won't) I can just sit on it until they take action presumably!

Something similar happened to me earlier this year, I ordered an item (£10) and it never arrived. Weeks later and zero communication I filed with Paypal.
Within minutes they marked the item as dispatched! I messaged them and told them under no circumstances to send me the item as I wanted a refund and nothing more.
4 days later item turned up and had been sent long after I'd told them not to send it. I messaged them again informing them I now had item AND refund and should they wish to get the item back please forward me the £1.80 postage and I'll send it at my convenience.
They never replied. Item is still in cupboard.

Thanks Pulliptears. I'm definitely going to do as you and Freddy advised. Can't imagine why someone would send something out after payment has been refunded unless they are totally oblivious! I have a feeling this guy won't reply either as he hasn't at all so far to any messages.

I don't Valli fortunately. I did sell via a business account but haven't used that for ages.

Well surprise surprise the puppy tag turned up today. I reckon either he was completely oblivious to the ebay case and all my messages or, maybe more likely, he had already engraved it weeks ago but not posted it, found it and posted it in the hope I would have to pay anyway.

Have sent him a message saying I'm happy to return it if he sends me return postage (it was sent with a 1st class stamp) or a SAE but I'm not holding my breath. I know a 1st class stamp isn't much but I really don't see why I should have to pay to return it and, as I said, don't trust him not to say he didn't receive it even if I do.

  • even if you did put a stamp on it and he claimed it never arrived he cant chase you for the money. If you havent opened it you could just mark it return to sender and pop it back in the post box.
