Bit harsh Phil, i too work in the estate / letting agency sector and have had boilers changed numerous times for well under £2k. Infact in small houses i've had whole systems (rads, pipework, boiler etc) installed for less than £2k!0

why would the EA be liable? Do you have any contract with them? How does this engineer know the boiler has not been serviced by someone else in the past 10years? Did he have the date he last visited, did he check that far back or was more of 'er about 10 years ago, which could actually have been 3 or 4 years ago and hey presto your worried about it and he quotes 3k for new boiler?
It was serviced in May then bang - 6 months later it broke down? What was the fault, sounds extreme to get a new boiler due to a 'simple electrical fault'.
Our last place had the boiler serviced every year and every year it gave us issues.0 -

I think it will work on the basis that you get a loan for the full amount of a replacement new energy efficient condensing boiler which you pay back through the saving in your gas bill of having an efficient boiler, so in effect you are not paying any extra on your bill, and once the loan is paid of you will be saving significantly on your bill by having a more efficient boiler. It is likely that your boiler would need to be working to qualify. I made enquiries about the boiler replacement scheme about a month ago, and was told about the new scheme.
That's useful to know, my boiler is nearly 30 years old and still works well (it was serviced on Monday and the engineer commented that it was in great condition for it's age). Obviously I will have to factor in replacing it in a few years ago but if there's a scheme then I will make sure I take advantage. Thanks!Mortgage May 2012 - £129k
January 2015 - Mortgage down to £114k

An electrical fault sounds more like an issue with the controller, not the boiler itself.
I don't think you have a hope against the agent, their defence would be they were only repeating what the vendor told them.Mortgage May 2012 - £129k

What did the small print on the estate agent's details say?0

Forget the bit about weighing in scrap.
A boiler can be replaced a lot cheaper than 3k.Official MR B fan club,dont go............................0 -
Agent can either...
1. Make things up so you buy the house. (Happens all the time)
2. Go on what they are told by the seller. (Happens all the time)
Which one is it?
Moral? Get the truth from the horses mouth (in writing) (which you have)0 -
The boiler is working now - why replace it?"You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0
