bogus insurance claims

About this time last yr my wife was involved in a minor bump nothing bad and luckily we knew the person and settled it ourselves so not to affect either party's insurance now as of last week i have received calls from different insurance companies asking about this accident i had last nov i can barely get any info out of them as to where they got this info about the accident or where they got my contact details from, i have played dumb up to now and said i know nothing about this accident but as soon as i say that they hang up. I'm pretty sure the last call came from CBS lawyer but can't be sure as he said it so fast and wouldn't repeat who he was.

Has anyone else been experiencing this same sort of thing or know anymore about this, thank you

  • First of all you say it is an insurer calling you and then you say it is a firm called "CBS Lawyer"? Which is it? Given you mention "lawyer" is this a UK case or USA?

If its solicitors then are they claiming to represent a Third Party wanting to make a claim against you or are they saying they want to represent you to claim for injury against the Third Party?
  • sorry its a uk case and the last call i took this morning was called cbs lawyers i just made an assumption that they were some kind of insurance company

*quote If its solicitors then are they claiming to represent a Third Party wanting to make a claim against you or are they saying they want to represent you to claim for injury against the Third Party?quote*

answer to this is neither they seem to follow the same script asking about a road accident i had in november they ask is this correct i say no but before i can elaborate or ask them any questions they hang up
  • If it was an associate that you had the accident with and are presumably still on good terms with then my guess is that the company that called are just fishing for a lead on personal injury cases - ie they want you to sue someone else for injuries sustained.

There are many companies that buy up vast quantities of data and fish for leads on PI because they can then sell those details on to a solicitor for a fair amount of money. Depending on how "hot" the lead is it can be worth up to £1,000 to them.

Some calls will be totally cold, ie they have no idea if youve even had any accidents at all and will talk in VERY vague terms about "your recent accident" that was "a little while ago" etc hoping that you bite and give them details. Sometimes accident repair companies/ garages sell your details after you come in for a quote etc and so they know a little more about when the accident was when they call you etc.

Of cause it could be a case that your associate is now making a PI claim in which case a call to them should clear up if they are or arent.

Finally it could be a bogus claim against you but if that is the case you can expect some post to turn up soon (and it is 99.99% of the time done by post not phone calls) and in that case pass it to your insurers to respond

You need to ask them if they notified their insurance.

If they did you need to ring yours and notify them for information only of the incident. Otherwise risk them cancelling or increasing premiums for non disclosure.

The call may have been a fishing scam, Ive had the texts £3200 or £2300 for the accident you had. I have not had any.

If they didnt notify their and you didnt notify yours then probably just random fishing.
