Dying a carpet

Has anyone had any luck dying a carpet? I am due to move into a place with hideous carpets.
The living room is patchy light brown with faded areas, there's a patterned orange one in a bedroom and others are snot green and faded blue.
I don't want bare floorboards so I would like to explore the option of dying them. Is this easy to do? Are the results worthwhile?

Presumably you are renting. There would be the landlord to consult.

Dont even think about dyeing the carpets, I dont even think its possible.

If you are going to be there long term, why not just recarpet the place your self

Or ask the landlord if he will share the cost.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

You cant dye a carpet yourself, get a really large plainer cheap rug, and use that on the floor to hide the carpet.

Apparently you can, but only nylon or wool carpets.

I'd not heard of it before. Apparently it's relatively common in the US. The company above is the only UK one I've found offering the service.

There are US websites that talk about how to dye a carpet yourself, but they say it's difficult to get the dye even as you have to build it up. Sounds like a potential recipe for disaster for the inexperienced! I think if I were to do it I'd want to employ a professional.

If the rooms aren't too large it might be worth looking for off cuts in local carpet stores, sometimes they can be had quite cheaply and probably for less that the cost of dye would be for such an area.

I remember my Mum doing it years and years ago after an incident with a melting orange lolly on her new cream carpet. I have no idea how she went about it. But it is possible.

Not renting, I'm sure most landlords would go nuts if you attempted to dye their carpet! :)
I may do a mix of off-cuts and dying, thanks for the suggestion. The carpets look good quality, just a little faded and terrible colours. It seems a shame to chuck them when I could give them a new lease of life. I'll post back if I do go down the dying root - in the mean time if anyone has had experience of doing this (good and bad) please post.
