How long do you have to declare car insurance claims?

Hi all,
I want to insure a friend on my car for a weekend away. He has made two claims in the past but says they were over 5 years ago so they don't need to be declared - is this true? My insurer has asked for details of claims but not been specific regarding any cut off.
Also, he has a speeding fine - the insurer hasn't asked for this specifically (unless it comes under convictions?) - do I need to offer this information?
Thanks for your help!!

There is no standard period used for wanting to know claims history, though most ask for the last 3 to 5 years. Convictions that are 'spent' need not be disclosed.0

Yes it comes under convictions if not asked for speeding outright.
You need to be careful. If his points are not properly declared or his claims
are within the timeframe your insurance are asking for, You risk the chance of him not being covered.
If there is an accident they will say sorrry you failed to declare these facts so your not covered case closed have a nice day.
Oh by the way we are cancelling your policy.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Thanks Quentin and forgotmyname. Yes, I probably worry too much (obviously more than my friend!) but you are right forgotmyname, there is no point adding him and not declaring the information, it will only come back to haunt me if we need to make a claim.
So to be safe I contacted my insurer, who said claims within 3 years had to be declared and convictions within 5 years. This is Elephant, although I take no responsibility for people using this information and not checking for themselves!!0
