Table top sales in empty High Street units?

Hi all,

Unusual question: My local council has obtained funding from the London Mayor's Office to utilise a 'pop up' shop in the high street (pop-up meaning temporary). Local residents have been asked for feedback and suggestions.

I suggested (with the expense of Christmas approaching) having a table top sale, where residents could set up a table and sell their unwanted items for a day... basically, an 'indoor boot sale' that the weather couldn't spoil. If it proved popular, and oversubscribed, maybe holding one each Saturday in the lead-up to Christmas?

In response, I've received little more than blank looks of disbelief! :o
I can't believe nobody else has tried something as relatively simple as this. Has anyone heard of such a thing? Did it work?

I've been to many table sales, problem is that there are usually very few sellers due to limited space and it gets very cramped.

I've actually thought of something similar in the past, the problem is regulations, each trader would need public liability insurance and would probably need vetting for building insurance too. The closest I've ever seen is in Blackpool where it was quite popular for a while to convert bigger stalls into indoor markets.

At least the council is trying to do something, most don't even bother.
