Holiday help - Turkey

Hi all,
Myself and my good lady are looking to visit Turkey this year. We were wondering if anyone has any advice or recommendations for a good place to visit? We're looking at visiting mid to end September, 11-14 nights.
We're early 30's, not into beach holidays or tourist resorts. We're looking for somewhere with good scenery, plenty of history and places to visit. We've focused more on the Alanya area at the moment but would appreciate any other suggestions you have.
If you're able to recommend a nice 4-5 star hotel, the smaller and more intimate the better I promise to send a postcard!
Thanks

Unless he has a tardis in his backyard, I'd have thought that was pretty obvious.
OP
Alanya sounds a reasonable place to start.
There are at least 2 historical places worth visiting within reasonable proximity:
Aspendos
Perge
Depending on how relaxing a holiday you want, it might be worth considering a trip to Cappadocia (which will be unlike anywhere you have ever seen), although you'd be talking of a few days at the very least.
Google these 3 places and see what you think.
I'd also suggest you try the Turkish forum on Tripadvisor.0 -
Istanbul, one of the world's great cities.
The capital city Ankara, which is often neglected by tourists, is well worth a couple of days.
Agree too with Pollycat about Cappadocia, brilliant place.
Also agree with Alanya, except that it's a couple of hours from Antalya airport.0 -
Alanya is pretty touristy. Personally, although I've not stayed there before, I'd stay in Antalya, it's not as touristy, there's a lovely harbour. There are so many good trips to be done, and you can do the same from Alanya, Antalya, Side..... Aspendos is amazing, also go to Pammukale / Heraklion 2 day trip, really cheap if you book when you get there with a local company rather than with your tour operator. Lots of half day trips too!0

Do you mean Heraklion (Crete) or Ephesus?
Ephesus is well worth a visit, it is one of the 7 ancient wonders of the world (Temple of Artemis Ephesia).
Also Pamukkale is something very different, although it's nowhere near as amazing now as it was when we first went 25 years ago but since it has become a World Heritage Site it has improved now all the hotels have been demolished.0 -
I went with my hubby in April. We went to the old part of istanbul....no beaches, or resorts. Lots of museums in close range and the old market and spice market were close by. Plenty of places to eat and the tram is good value and easy to get around in. The latest bond movie was filmed there the week after we left. Really is a lovey place and the people were really friendly0

Personally I like Dalyan, half hour? transfer from Dalaman airport. More scenic than historic but a real Turkish village/town. Over night trips from here to Ephesus. Pammakule & Cappadocia.
As said by a previous poster where ever you go book trips locally from a local office (rather than your tour company) and do a bit of bargaining! such as what's the price if I buy this trip & that trip??Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!
