How quickly do credit checks show on credit report?

Hi. First visit here so be gentle!

I have applied and been approved for a Sainsbury credit card for balance transfer. I quoted the card and the amount I wished to transfer from but my application didn't show any credit limit. When I enquired I was told it was £1500. As this is short of what I wish to transfer I cancelled the card. Surely if i have quoted the card i wish to transfer from and the amount why dont they give their response on that information? How do I ensure I can get a card which will give me the limit I require?

The amount you request to BT is irrelevant really. It's purely a mechanism to speed up your balance transfers so that they happen as soon as the card is setup. Your limit is defined by your income and your credit report
