I can't believe an insurer takes the word of the policyholder and doesn't look further into the condition. Are we expected to be medical specialists now?

Put your complaint letter together as Andy suggested.

  • Very good idea, will do.

No formal written claim, I phoned HSBC Life and spoke to someone who emailed me a form to fill in, and then he said it didn't qualify based on that. No-one contacted any of the medical professional concerned.

Thanks for all of this, I will proceed accordingly.

I agree with Andy, submit it in writing as he outlined plain and simple. I wouldn't bother the doctors at this stage as whilst the quoted extract of the cancer defintion in 1997 might be right it might not be as things were constantly changing in this market and the one in your policy is the one that is relevance.

IF the sum is a large amount then HSBC won't be making the final decision on the claim anyway, it will go to their reinsurance company for approval.

If you do accept the claim they should backdate it and refund the premiums from date of diagnosis. I would be asking for interest as well, although you might just be happy with the payout.

ps hope hubby has been doing well.
