Surrey/SW London renting

I'm looking for suggestions for places within commuting distance of Surbiton (train) that aren't ridiculously expensive but still nice! (I want it all, I know :rotfl: )

Currently pay £700pcm for a 3 bed place, and I know we won't get anything like that, but would love some tips as to where to start looking. I've had a quick browse on Rightmove so far...been looking at Woking, Guildford and Farnborough- any thoughts on commute or nice areas?

Thanks :)

Commute not bad from all of them (45min give or take) Guildford nices place followed by Woking and then Farnborough prices reflect this about the same distance as Farnboroughis Aldershot about same as Farnborough Ash Vale between Aldershot and Farnham is not to bad. A bit further out Fleet and Farnham are quite nice.

A 3 bed would be quite a bit more than £700 a month in all of the areas.

Farnborough is quick commute and a cheaper area for rent.Haslemere is nice, but may need a change in train at Guildford.
I'd say Guildford is a great place. Pretty expensive rent though.

Thanks for replies- we don't really need a 3 bed place as it's just me and my partner, we just have a lot of stuff! But I'd be happy to downsize a bit- been looking at 2 beds, or even 1 bed flats (of which there are a lot of!)

Will have a look at some of the places mentioned- cheers :)

Bit of lateral thinking here. you're commuting a long way on crowded and very expensive trains.

Move two stops further into London. New Malden's five minutes away by train. Good shops, villagey, spacious, low crime. easy to get to Wimbledon and Kingston (again five minutes by train). Range of shops from lidl to Waitrose.

Swimming baths, parks, golf range. Lived there for years so know it well.

Look it up and see what you think.:)

edit; monthly season tickte to Surbiton, just over £60. Travelcard over £90 if you want to visit Kingston (extra for Wimbledon). Also fast buses to Croydon shopping and Heathrow Airport with £2 fare).

It is worth keeping in mind the cost of train fairs a monthly season from Farnborough to Surbiton is about £240 and £172 from Woking.
  • £700 wont get a 1 bed flat in New Malden.

You could get a 1 bed flat in Woking for £650 but if you are both commuting to Surbiton you would have to add £342 to that.
  • As a regular user of SW Trains you don't want to be in a position where you rely on 2 train lines. So I'd get on a direct train line if I were you.

Weybridge is a nicer town than Woking although a bit more expensive (but compare journey time and commute cost). Note the station is not that close to the centre of Weybridge
    Mortgage May 2012 - £129k
    January 2015 - Mortgage down to £114k
Target for 2015 to get down to £105k
  • If you stretched your budget a bit and were happy with a 1-bed you might be able to find something in Surbiton itself. Last year we were paying £800pcm for a nice little 1-bed about 7 minutes walk from Surbiton Station - if you work in Surbiton you'd be paying nothing in train fares, plus a 1-bed might be cheaper council tax wise, so in total it may not be that expensive.

I own a 1 bed rental flat in Kingston & rents are now over 1000 GBP pcm. It is a nice one though & it's never been empty.

In fact, its such a nice flat I may move in 1 day.
