We cook quorn chunks and fillets in our slow cooker. You could chop up all your root vegetables including onions, get a tin of chopped tomatoes, and then mix your stock cube with a little boiling water.
Place your chopped tomatoes in slow cooker followed by your quorn and vegetables, then pour over a little stock. If you liked you could add a tin of green lentils or a handful of red split peas. Cook it on low for 7 hours.
You can add extra flavours using mixed herbs, or you could make it into a curry with either some curry paste/powder/or what about pouring in a tin of 4p curry sauce! yummy!

    Thanks for that :)

We stock up on the quorn fillets usually when they are on special offer at Asda. Bought some medium curry powder today (got Tesco value curry sauce also) and i bought some red lentils ..can i use these in a slow cooker? or can you only use them for lentil soup?? maybe i will look for some split peas tomorrow

For a quick tasty curry :-

I use a ready-make sauce like Lloyd Grossman's Thai Red Curry Sauce ... this is really lovely, but of course any make can be used.

Chop up any meat into medium sized chunks (enough for 2 - 4 people).

Mash up a tin of carrots to make a puree (for a richer taste).

Add a couple of chopped garlic bulbs and one onion (if you can be bothered!).

Bung into the slow cooker and cook on low all day.

Serve with favourite rice and naan bread.

I made the above when we had some friends round and served it up when we'd been to the pub. Everyone wanted the recipe, so had to admit I'd cheated!

    ;)

Hey MimiJane - I'm trying this tonight. Have just put it on at 8.45am - will let you know how it goes, but will say that it looks lush already!
  • Wow - gorgeous. I put beef chunks in mine. Chopped the onion and garlic, with the mashed carrot and threw it all in cold. Don't need to cook this one for very long. 5 hrs on low is enough. If it gets runny, take the lid off for a bit and it'll reduce down. I added some coconut milk at the end and some chillie flakes - loved it. Thanks

When you go to www.google.co.uk, click on 'more' at the top of the page and it will bring up a list. click on books and type in Slow Cooker Recipes in the search box.

This will bring up books on the subject, some of which have a limited preview ie you can read part of the books online.

You will find lots of recipes for free there.

Still a bit worried about doing a whole chicken in it but am going to attempt it this weekend. I understand that I should brown it first. This sounds really trickey to brown a whole chicken in a frying pan!! Oh well - give it a go.
    Watch this space.....

I did a whole chicken in mine a couple of weeks ago and didn't bother browning it first. OK you don't get crispy skin, but you do get beautifully moist well cooked meat, and LOADS of yummy stock.

I did not put any liquid in with the chicken (except the usual lemon up the bum with a clove of garlic) and it cooked up beautifully. I took all the meat out with a couple of forks, left all the skin, bones and liquid in, then added a stock cube, half a glass of wine (leftovers) a bay leaf and put it back on for a few hours to make a wonderful stock - which later made really tasty parsnip soup - also done in the SC!

lexilex - don't know if this had been posted but try a gammon joint slow cooked with a bottle of coke. delicious, bit like honey roast ham.

for curry chuck the chicken in, any veg you've got lying about, a tin of tomatoes and a couple of tins of 4pence Tesco own brand curry sauce. preparation time under a minute!

That gammon sounds lovely! I did it with orange juice and a honey & mustard glaze but will def have to try the coke!

I am totally lost with this curry! I am sat in the kitchen with a bowl of chopped up onions, some chicken, a jar of Lloyd Grossman balti sauce, a tin of chopped tomatoes and a thousand different spices from past curry attempts. This could be interesting...
  • For the vegi stew, I always use quorn sausages and vegtable gravy. I will be trying this in my slow cooker at some point. I have only ever done the vegi one in the saucpan, but I am sure it would work just fine. Dont go in for the vegi beef myself, it just tasted wrong.
Debt free since July 2013! Woo hoo! The bank actually laughed when I said I have come in to cancel my overdraft.
