No idea on rice pudding, but if it's anything like the porridge I have attempted to cook twice now - make sure you put it on LOW!!! I mistakenly put porridge in on high overnight, and 3 days later I'm still trying to get it off the pot. I'd say plenty of liquid, as my porridge always comes out like glue.
This year I'm getting organised once and for all, and going to buy a house with my wonderful other half. And that' s final!

Hope you don't mind me hi-jacking this, but I can't seem to find the usual 'in my SC today' thread...I bought my SC as a birthday treat for myself in January. Its had a lot of use (and I've had a lot of stew!) but now it is gathering a bit of dust. What do you die-hard SC fans cook in your SC in the Summer? I'd really like to come home to something a bit lighter than my fave beef in red wine.

Have been searching for it myself, and it must have slipped way back! Obviously not many of us using our SC's at the moment. Maybe one of the board guides can find it and move out posts to it. Or maybe it's worthwhile starting a new one!

Got mine on today (freezing cold and blowing a gale here!) with ham shank (cooked overnight and chopped up this morning) with leeks, carrots, onions, swede, potatoes, soup and broth mix, dried mixed herbs and two veggie stock cubes. That will be served with some home-made herby dumplings :D.

Half of the cooking liquid has been reserved for a pan of pea-soup tomorrow - will put the yellow split peas, some lentils and a box of ordinary peas in to soak later on along with the remaining meat.

The shank had been in the freezer for a couple of months - so deserved rescuing from the depths!
  • hi, i hope nobody minds me jumping in but i'm a newbie and could do with some slow cooker advice please.

i have a 6.5litre sc but i only cook for me, my husband and 3yr old son. i follow the recipes but sometimes the food doesn't even cover the bottom of the cooker and ends up dried up or tasting burnt (eg spag bol), would a smaller one be better or am i just cooking it wrong do you think?

also are there any standard guide times for cooking certain meats and veggies. i've seen loads of recipe ideas on this and other threads but they just kind of say what to put in but not how long to cook for or on what heat.

any advice very gratefully received :)
    thanks

Hey Lisa  can't really offer any help cuz I'm new to slow cooking too, but!

If you cooked twice as much at a time, you can freeze the extra to have as a 'ready meal' for a time when you don't have the time....if you see what I mean:p

Hi Lisa - a 6.5litre SC is a little bit big for 2 adults and 1 child, if you are only wanting to cook the meal that you want to eat there and then.

You would be far better aiming to make double (or triple) quantities and then freezing the leftovers in portions for future use. OR you could get a smaller SC that would hold enough for the three of you. Only 2 of us here - but I do cook in advance and freeze in containers for future use. Lots of chillis, stews, curries and soups stashed in the freezer mostly in lidded margarine tubs :D. Any small amounts get frozen in smaller containers for using up on jacket potatoes.

I've recently upgraded to a 6.5litre and was amazed how much more it held than my original 5litre one (which has now been commandered by DS). Have to admit though, that my 6.5 is not as adaptable as my original one. This one doesn't have the 3 different heat settings  that I had been used to.
  • thanks for the replies :)
makes sense to cook more and freeze so i think i'll stick with my 6.5 rather than buying a new one x
