Good restaurants in London

Options
Staying in the Berners Hotel just off Oxford street for the weekend and was wondering if there are any good restaurants to choose from within the vicinity.

Maybe something like Jamie Olivers place.

Also going to watch a show, but not sure which one.
My partner suggested Jail House Rock!!!!

cheers

  • Jamie's restaurant - Fifteen - is near Old Street tube so quite far from Oxford Street and the West End area - and it appears to be very expensive for average food.

Much restaurants that serve good food and are cheap as well tend to be ethnic restaurantes. All of the Chinese restaurants in China Town can be recommended but especially Mayflower on Shaftesbury Avenue - though you will definately need to book as it is v popular.

If you want somewhere that is a bit more American then there is Ed's Easy Diner on Moor Street (Leicester Sq Tube) that do great burgers, onion rings and shakes - they are goocd value for money and child friendly too.

For pre-theatre there is a happy hour at a noodle bar called Soba off Oxford St opposite the Plaza Shopping Centre where you caqn get any main course for £4 between 5 - 7pm - fast service, friendly & reasonably priced drinks.

Doesn't Fifteen have a three month waiting list or something similar?

A nice quirky restaurant (one of my favourites), is Sarastro at the Strand.
On a Sunday&Monday night, they have live opera singers come to your table while you eat.
The place is decorated as an opera house. Very reasonably prices menu and a set one at £22.50, for the "show" dinner. Fun night out.
    website is : https://www.sarastro-restaurant.com

Jailhouse Rock is OK if you like Elvis. Although a shame he wasn't allowed to sing the actuall song, due to copy right.

Smollensky's, also at the Strand, another good Sunday nighter, with live jazz and a nice.........ish menu. Especially the roast pork...............yummmm

Oslo Court in St Johns Wood is a fabulous place to eat, huge selection of starters and mains without the pretension of celebrity chef associated prices and hype.

Short cab ride from Oxford Street.

I can recommend many of those restaurants previously mentioned. Soba, the noodle place, is great - in fact I recommended it to somebody on the Regional Moneysaving board the other day!

Sarastro is a "love it or hate it" sort of place. It now has a sister restaurant, Papageno, a short walk away on Wellington Street (virtually next door to the Royal Opera House). Great atmosphere and not too expensive, however the atmosphere is really what you're paying for - the food is decent but nothing special.

Fifteen is, as others have said, very difficult to get into at short notice. It's also top-of-the-range expensive. I've been there but it was a romantic treat and I wasn't paying. When OH went to the loo I sneaked a look at the receipt - £175 for two!  This is a moneysaving site after all!

Depending on which end of Oxford Street you're at, there's a lovely Italian on Edgware Road - can't remember what it's called, but am being taken there on Sunday so will report back. There are also lots of nice Italian restaurants on St Christopher's Place, a little enclosed maze of shopping streets behind the shops next to Selfridges.
If I think of anywhere else I'll post it on here.

  • This may have been missed but seen on the Online/Offline Discount Voucher Board is a £15 voucher off the total bill (w/ apparent no min spend) at Chez Gerard, Livebait, Cafe Fish or Berterolli restaurants - so effectively free food.
