How to find out car insurance quotes without actually owning the vehicle

My son who is 24 has had a full licence for 4 years but has not got a car yet. He uses mine to travel too and from work but he feels he now wants to get his own car. How can he find out which vehicles he can afford to insure. Will the fact that he has been on my insurance for 4 years get him any discount?

  • Insurers allow you to tick a box or equiv to say you dont have the vehicle yet and thus are able to select the cars make, model, mark etc rather than having to enter the vehicle registration.

Most would argue it is prudent to do the test quotes using slightly different details (made up name, DoB 1 day different, different house number/ name etc) to avoid any possiblity of being caught up in fraud detection systems when you do buy because they see lots of different combinations of vehicles, mileage etc and think its quote manipulation. The one downside is that when you do the true quote it may be slightly different due to a number of factors.

He will have his clean claims history but no NCD unless your policy is one of the minority of insurers that give ND NCD but this is only valid with that insurer and even with the discount it wont necessarily be the cheapest (your son is presumably a fairly different demographic to you)

Many insurers and brokers do give introductory discounts but these are automatically applied and so just do the quotes etc and the prices will include them if they give them

Thank you for your reply. You have confirmed what I thought about putting in slightly different details. My daughter had been checking out different quotes as she wanted to change her car and her insurance company got in touch with her, randomly, asking for her licence her passport mine and her dads licence as we are on her policy, what a palaver. I want to change my car but not sure what I can afford to insure with my son on it also.
