No, it's not. Get a Humax, as already advised, they are streets ahead of anything else on the market. (and I'm not a Humax rep either).
You will normally connect via HDMI, and the Freeview tuner in the TV will not be used.No free lunch, and no free laptop

If you just want to record whilst your not around you might be able to use a USB stick or external HDD.
What TV do you have.0 -
Since manager's specials are being suggested what about one of the non HD versions http://www.humaxdirect.co.uk/prodCat.asp?cat=factory&type=stb0

All you need is another freeview box and a hard disk recorder of some sort, quality depending on quality of recording you want.
We have freeview on the TV, external Freesat box and cable. The Freesat and the cable are plugged into a Targa hard disc recorder thence to the TV, if we want to record something we have the choice of those two and can continue to watch something else on the TV through Freeview.
OK, if we had not built this up over time we might have chosen to go with Freeview or Freesat plus, but this way we have total control over what we record without depending on signals from the tv stations, it might be a bit more complicated to set up, we have to set up the timer rather than press a button, but it works for us.What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0 -
+1 for Humax. Get a PVR-9x00T (9200T 9300T 9500T) if you can find one0
