I hope one of you good people will be able to help. I want to make a dessert from some slightly soft apples and pears but I have no margarine to make a cake, pastry etc. I do have lard but that's it, also I only have 1 egg! Is there anything I can do with them other than stewed fruit with custard?
Any ideas, no matter how crazy, are very welcome.

Have you any biscuits? If so, stew the apples and pears in the microwave or saucepan and wizz the biscuits up in a processor and sprinle over the top like a crumble mix.You could poach the pears in some fruit juice, or do baked apple in the microwave (takes 2 minutes)I Believe in saving money!!!:T

That sounds nice but ... You guessed it! No biscuits either. I do have bread, cereals and all other baking ingredients for what that's worth!0

You could make pastry with just the lard, I've done that many a time when I've had no butter (normally I'd use half and half).0

I usually use half and half too. Would it not taste a bit too lardy though without the butter added?0

What kind of cereals? No reason why you couldn't whizz up a mixture of bread and cereals to make the crumble?0 -
Stew the fruit, butter thin slices of bread then cut into triangles and layer over the top of the fruit. Sprinkle with sugar, and cinnamon if you like it, then bake until bread is crispy and golden brown.
Edited to add....just re-read and see you have no margerine, if you have no butter either, then lard will work just as well, just be a little sparing when you spread it to avoid greasiness. Please be patient with any mis-spellings and typos I am officially useless with a touchscreen keyboard!!! :mad:0 -

No, it should be fine. There isn't really a strong taste, although if you were concerned you could add a little bit of sugar and/or vanilla to the pastry. Lard makes nice short pastry anyway so it should be lovely0 -
Make a yorkshire pud batter, grate the fruit or slice thin and mix into the batter, fry spoonfuls to make fruit fritters, serve with syrup, icecream or sprinkled with sugar.0

cut the fruit into hefty chunk and if you have some lolly sticks (or sturdy straws - or even cocktail sticks) stick them in the fruit - melt some sugar down to make a caramel and when a lovely dark colour dip the fruit in to make 'caramel lollys'. or just toss the fruit in and serve.0

Make some pancakes and fill with the fruitBlessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light
