UniQlo did some cheap merino wool jumpers/cardis last year, I didn't get them but might be worth having a look0

Wow, I really didn't expect such a huge response. I've thanked all responders individually, but thanks also to the phantom mod that corrected the spelling error in the title, it was annoying me!0

As a non cyclist, are the merino wool base tops suitable for wearing indoors to keep warm? are they very snug fitting? I expect they will be good for walkers too?0

Arch bargain.
If you buy on-one merino products go two sizes up, even with careful washing, pulling into shape and allowing to air dry it stills shrinks.
Crisp packet in the oven springs to mind.0 -

Definately. Come winter I wear baselayers almost all the time as I hate wearing jumpers in the house.0 -
Thanks!
I saw merino tops in aldi last week for a tenner.0 -
Not seen 'proper' baselayers, but I picked up padded leggings in Sports Direct for £13 the other week. They stock 'Muddy Fox' branded stuff and it's a lot cheaper than Wiggle etc.Disgruntled saver (hating low interest rates) who LOVES a good survey and a freebie!

Decathlon have all their skiing gear in at the moment including merino thermal vests and longs. There's a very wide range of thermals in Decathlon if you look round the skiiing, hiking and cycling departments.
Neoprene overshoes are the cycling equivielent of fleecy lined wellies btw and protect your feet, ankles and lower legs from road spray.
And for gloves wear thin ones for warmth under Goretex or similar type cycling gloves. You really need good palm and finger grip so buy proper cycling gloves.
A thin Polartech type hat with earflaps is good for under a cycling helmet, or one of these tube type scarf-hats in bright colours. Make sure you re-fit your helmet straps if using either of these under a helmet of course.
The other big chill zones are your chest and lower back, a long fleece + windproof layer bodywarmer under your outer jacket is good for this. My OH is tall but found some really good hiking type bodywarmers of this type in Decathlon last year and I cut them down to make them shorter at the front, for easier pedalling.
And don't forget some extra reflective patches on your gear, whatever it is.Val.0
