this is such an interesting thread
im constantly battling to get my food shop less money. i plan my meals monthly on a white board and then i write weekly lists that have all my main ingredients on them. then i add what i run out of on the lists.there are four of us at home,,two adults two children and my daughter comes round prob twice a week. i bake every week..cakes and biscuits and everything is made from scratch. i make most of my own bread and rolls but do have a loaf in the freezer for standby. prob buy one a week. im a good basic cook nothing fancy. i spend £100 a week and the cupboards still look fairly bare.really it lasts for 5 days and the last two days i struggle to find snackie things to eat.
i dont know if im allowed to say names but black saturn did a really really good food plan on here and ive nabbed a lot of ideas...has anyone read it??
  • I set aside £260 a month for me, hubby and 5 guinea pigs but rarely spend that much. I think we eat very well on that, I don't buy ready meals but do buy frozen chips and sometimes a pie or some fish portions but I don't buy the cheap ones, they have to be whole cod or haddock etc

Meat wise I only buy free range chickens and higher welfare pork products, I now buy most my meat from our local farm shop and once a month we spend about £50 on wine from majestic for hubby and I buy the odd bottle of wine from the supermarket for me.

I do watch what we spend, but I think we have a generous budget and we can comfortably afford that. I suppose we could cut back if we had to but we're fortunate that we don't need to, but I think I'd struggle to spend more than that a month. We eat very well for that, fresh fruit and veg, home made meals every day though I don't buy crisps or sweets etc and rarely buy pop which I think helps as they can quickly add up.

I'm happy with the amount I spend, I could easily spend more, but I don't want to, I'd rather have that money for other things.

I'd love to have £380 per month available to spend on food ...)

I'll admit to not having read every post on the thread but OP seemed to be saying that he spent more than most mse/OS posters spend on food and he was happy with it. I felt there was an undertone of 'that's because we choose to eat healthy and branded' but maybe that's just the way I read it.

I'm one of the fortunate ones who shop frugally from choice. I feel I've worked hard for the money I have and I'm not going to waste it being ripped off by some of the supermarkets. Of course it's an uphill struggle with rising prices but that's my choice. Many would feel I'm extravagant with meals out with friends, expensive hairdresser, quality wine at home but that's my choice too.

For those of you who have to shop frugally because money is tight then well done:T and thanks so much for sharing your advice.

You spend £1280 p/m on food! My cats have the best none of that cheap rubbish! And we only spend about £300 p/m on shopping and eat well every night. No ready meals or chips and beans but homemade food! Where do you shop Harrods?? If you got the money great im not having a go but thats more than i spend on all my outgoings! LOL :)

Silly me, £320 a month. Trying to cut that down now so the cats can start economising with us.
