What can I grow up side of ugly pebbledash garage?

The only problem is there's only about 6/7 inches of soil around it leading to a path.

I want some really fast growing climbers that are fairly easy and foolproof.

I have planted virginia creeper but this only comes out in autumn so I need something for cover straight away if possible.

It gets fairly good light and I think our back garden is north facing although we still get good sun (does this make sense?).

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Clematis should do the trick, just choose the trpe to match your growth area.

Whatever you plant with that width border you are going to have to spend time keeping it fed and watered. Or you extend your growing area by making a bit of a raised bed, giving more depth.

A mix of the large flowered varieties could look stunning. If you have the patience to train it, combine it with a contrasting coloured rose?
My first reply was witty and intellectual but I lost it so you got this one instead :D

  • I've seen clematis in Morrisons for around £2 each - would these do or would I need bigger plants?

Clematis armandii is evergreen with small white star shaped flowers and large waxy green leaves. Grows like mad on a NNW facing wall and doesn't seem to mind poor soil. There's also a climbing hydrange (petularis sp?) which is good on a north wall, sorry - can't remember if it's everygreen or not.
Don't be tempted by Russian Vine - you'll get rapid, excellent coverage and after a couple of years won't be able to find your garage !
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

Oooh, nice idea, and isn't armandii one of the lightly perfumed clems?

The Morrisons ones should be fine, don't forget to get a bit of trellis or some training wires up to give them something to hold onto.
