Sorry if a stupid question

I hope I am posting this in the right place. I am dealing with my mothers estate so think here is ok?

If someone has been receiving a pension from a private plan/pension does that mean they are no longer 'contributing' to the scheme?

My mothers Private pension had a section that says:Benefits payable should you die whilst contributing to the scheme:
-a survivors pension each year of (amount)
-a child's pension each year of (amount)
-a lump sum of 3 your salary
-a refund of your contributions plus interest (where applicable) to date of death.

My mother did receive payments quarterly from this pension and I have had a letter back from the company stating that a survivors pension is payable along with contributions. There no children 18 or under so nothing due there and no mention of the lump sum hence my original question (sorry if it is a stupid/obvious one, I just don't want to send the forms back off if I am being misled about what is due).

It might be worth trying the pensions board for a detailed answer. http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/forumdisplay.php?f=19

In short, you cannot contribute towards a pension scheme once you draw benefits.

The conditions you quote are similar to those on my own pension - if I die in service then there is a lump sum paid and an enhanced widows/dependents pension. If I die in deferment or in retirement, there is only an un-enhanced survivors pension.

Call the pension administrators or trustees. As long as you are executor/administrator they should deal with you. You may have to prove your status first, though.

It does sound as though the scheme has sent you the wrong letter - as rpc says check with them

I would expect that there could be a survivor's pension - for your father if still alive - and possibly a lump sum if the pension hadn't been in payment very long

    But schemes do vary
  • Thank-you both. I called the scheme and there is a survivors pension payable to my step-father and also contribution paid to the scheme payable to myself and my sister.

*I realised after posting that this wasn't the right place but wasn't sure if/how I could move/delete so reposted in the correct section afterwards
