insurance when hiring a car

We don't need a car that much so just rent one when we need to. That saves us quite a bit but we're keen to see if we can save even more. We always take the car hire insurance to bring the excess down as much as possible, to zero if we can. This is because years ago someone hit the car when it was parked and we had a large bill to pay. There has to be an annual policy that we could use instead of paying the car hire firm each time. Can anyone recommend one and have they had cause to claim on it? Did it work? Sorry if this duplicates any other threads - had a quick look and didn't see anything.
Many thanks

There are many 3rd party policies that you can buy which provide annual cover, google car hire insurance and you'll find them.
I've worked with the parent company of one before so dont have an unbiased view to make a recommendation but I did take out a general excess policy from a company that offers car hire insurance and had no problems making a claim under it (even though I had bought knowing their wording issues)0
