Home Water Testing Help Please!

Hello,

I've just moved into a house 7 weeks ago with 3 other girls (its a student house) and one of the girls was complaining the water didn't taste right but I figured as she was from Ireland maybe its the hardness thats making it taste different? But then another girl said it tastes odd too - I myself can't see the issue but I don't really want to be drinking water if its bacteria ridden. I'm drinking the water if im boiling it or cooking with it but I'm buying bottled water if I want to drink it plain and obviously, as a student, this is something I do not want to be paying for!

Does anyone know whether you can get free testing kits from anywhere? Or even ones that are quite cheap - the only ones I have seen are around £20-30 and that's my weekly stipend so I can't really afford it.

I don't really want to complain to the landlord until I know for certain there is an issue because I don't want to waste anyones time.

Any advice or help?

Thankyou!

Well if it's in London or surrounding areas the water is pretty grim at the best of times. See the scummy layer on a cup of tea!
  • Ring your water company. If there have been any issues with the supply they will know. If necessary, they will come and test it for you.

As Hintza says, if you're in or near London the water is grim compared to elsewhere! I threw out a lot of cups of tea thinking the mug wasn't cleaned property...then I realised it was the hard water.

    Buy a Brita water filter.
"You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"
  • I live in Brighton?

I'm not sure if Brita water filters will rid the water of bacteria? But i'll check them out anyway.

I may give the water board a ring, see if they can check it.

    Thanks all!
