iPad repair

Hi there,

Bought a shiny iPad 2 last week and dropped it on Sunday and the screen cracked. Gutted. Looked for repairs and it seems a very rare service but contacted http://www.123ipadspecialist.co.uk/ these people and then got phoned by Urmston Computers who offered to repair it for £89 including courier collection. They take payment after collection by invoice.

I am rather concerned to give them my ipad or my money - does anyone have any experience with these or a similar service? Any other advice you can offer?

Thanks
Mike

If you want to do it properly, then Genius bar is the way to go. That should not invalidate any further warranty claims you might have from the under 12 months part. As in battery lasting the right time by 12 months (or 24 if you bought the apple care)

Basically if you did it at home, see if you can claim on household, but you may not have a choice of having it done at the genius bar, probably through some 3rd party that may invalidate said 12 month warranty for the battery life/manufacturing defects etc. You possibly will have to pay an excess, and also say about a claim in the future, may affect future premiums too, so depending on what you want to pay out of pocket.
Frankly I wouldn't send it off as such a new unit to a random unknown, I'd rather pay the extra for apples own repair system, and you will pay extra if you go down the genius bar route.

Also go buy: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B007Y6HNXU/ref=noref?ie=UTF8&psc=1&s=computers (other colours and prices available and use it when it's fixed!~)

Once bought, then investigate add ons for your bank account, sometimes they offer free gadget insurance (check the max item amount) for accidental damage. You might have to pay a few quid a month for this. I use Barclays and it covers my phone and ipad, inc overseas

Many thanks. A shame that the nearest shop is in Manchester, harrumph!
  • If you bought it on credit card its worth checking if you are covered as some cards provide limited insurance cover on new purchases.

Briefly very excited but discovered that Barclays platinum does not include this. Harrumph!

If I were you, go and get a quote for a screen repair from apple. They might not be able to replace the screen as a repair, and may say to do an OOW: an out of warranty repair is basically swap out with most likely a refurb model for £206.44 (may include 7ish for postage on top) **

Check household (contents) insurance to see if they do cover accidental and large item price/gadget under your terms of policy, and how much your excess would be. If they send it off to someone you will lose out on the limited warranty in the future due to "disassembly, unauthorized service"

Possibly cheaper to do it through the contents insurance in the long run.

    **
An iPad that is ineligible for warranty service may be eligible for Out-of-Warranty (OOW) Service. For example, an iPad that has failed due to damage as result of an accident is ineligible for warranty service but may be eligible for OOW service.
    Out-of-Warranty Service
If you own an iPad that is ineligible for warranty service but is eligible for Out-of-Warranty (OOW) Service, Apple will replace your iPad with an iPad that is new or equivalent to new in both performance and reliability for the Out-of-Warranty Service fee listed below.

My iPad 1 broke, so booked an appointment with the Genius Bar & took it to the Apple Store (Trafford Centre), who informed me it will cost 'X' to repair, but they don't repair them and will swap it for a NEW one (of the same model & Spec.) for the cost of the repair.

So 10 mins later I walked out the store with a New iPad 1 (my old one was 2 years old).

So if you don't want to risk a dodgy repair (if you ever see it again) just take it back to Apple.
  • The "repair" service for Apple products is a rip off when you actually do some research on parts cost or just apply common sense.

The touch screen glass digitizer panel part costs £69.98 for official Apple (although many of the so called third party Chinese parts actually come from the same factory just under a different label)

Its the fraction of the replacement cost and I am actually getting my own iPad back instead of some stock which may have been returned or just had a damaged box or whatever.

I would only replace my iPad due to water damage (which is notorious for causing ongoing damage to the iPad)
