Vanpopple, I worked out its about a pound an hour and reckon 1 in a 1000 return, but still has more value to me than just a prize return in many ways.

So to anyone thinking comping is BETTER than a job, there you go £1 an hour is a fair estimate on what you could get in return for doing basically a 7 day a week job (NMW £6.XX) Hmm even maccyds sounds like a better option..

But...I enjoy comping and the wins ive had have been great, and the cash i won (£500/£250 x2) paid for 10 days in majorca, so all in all im happy enough..

But in NO WAY should comping be taken seriously its all for fun and handy for those like me who cant work and are at home all day.
I dont expect to win, but i will win the averages like spiderkebab says is around 1 in 1000....Very very tiny returns for the amount entered, but its better than watching jeremy kyle!!!!!

GOOD LUCK TO ALL FOR XMAS

hey vanpopple don't knock maccyds ;) - my daughter's OH works there - keeps him off the dole & in college & her in books .

It's nice to see an article which isn't all " I made £30k last year by comping " and if it puts people off more prizes left for us

Has the number of compers really increased?
Many who start are soon put off by the amount of effort on your part that it actually takes. Just like the Author of this article.

Every single person I have taught to comp (thanks to the excellent guide on here), do about a week and then get tired of it.

My point is many may take it up, but I honestly believe only about 1 percent of those people actually stick at it.

Thanks for the article. Wonder if she tried any mag dailies.

Interesting about people not sticking to it. You may be right. I keep thinking about giving it up, but I just cant :rotfl:

I once saw a thread on another website about comping (the thread was about comping not the website) and someone got into an argument with another poster as they said they were not a 'comper' because they only entered 20 a week or so. The other poster said that they must be a comper as they entered a lot more than most people. Little do most people realise exactly what a 'comper' actually is and how much work or how many competitions goes into the hobby.

Big thanks to all who post comps :T:beer:

My family are always going on about learning how to comp but everyone I've shown (via MSE and VelvetGlove's guide) has given up. Apparently far too much effort.

Yes it is, it takes time and patience and often doesn't result in much but there is no way I would give up.

Interesting point, I had an conversation with someone on facebook about what a "comper" is - to me it means someone who enters a competition - whether it be one or a thousand. Anyone who participates in a competition is a comper in my eyes :)
    Thanks to all posters :A

Well if you take the number who are using MSE then I would say it has been steadily increasing for the last few years.

I take note of the number who thank the posts. I know that is only a fraction of those who are actually entering the competition being posted but the number of thanks particularly on high value comps like ITV is definitely rising.

Quite right, my oh brother also works in Mds - he does nights and gets a decent wage!
And just to quickly add to other points, i only began in feb but when i think back i dont recall seeing many comps which had say more than 1000 views/thanks (regular not dailies) whereas now almost every page of comps and every comp is hitting that number more often than not..
Of course theres people like me who dont tick thanks (however my startegy is soon to change to tick all the december comps that id like) (but i contribute where i can in posts most days and ALWAYS ALWAYS pm the poster when i win and usually put an IWIW post).

To be a serious comper is where if youre like me, i get depressed if i miss a day - thinking damn bet ive missed some big prizes.
But if you only eneter 10 a week then technically 'youre a comper' theres just different degrees of comping as with anything in life.

You can tell a true comper because they will develop 'compers elbow'. It's similar to tennis elbow, comes from too many hours spent at the flipping laptop. Now then, where can I win myself a support bandage and some Ralgex? :D
I am brave, I am bruised
I am who I'm meant to be
I'm not scared to be seen
    I make no apology
    THIS IS ME!

When you talk down to others it says more about you than them.

Good point and I suppose you're right.

I will say then a comper is anyone who has entered competitions regularly (I wouldnt say someone who has entered one comp to be a comper) no matter if its 10 a year or 10,000 a day , but a serious comper are those who spend a lot of time trying to enter as many as possible.
