Can't decide between these two. Do either have an application that acts like a satnav? Going to Florida and it would be helpful.

I don't think the ipad mini wifi has gps built in, so that would push you to the 3g model (£369 for the 16gb) - and you would have to get a third party app for the sat nav,
the nexus 7 has gps on the basic model so you can pick the size you like there, you can use google navigation with it if you have access to a data connection to download the bits of map you want - but that could be expensive unless you can plan the routes and not deviate from them, there are a couple of proper satnav apps around but not sure the costs involved - have heard the tom tom app is good and only needs the gps signal (after you've downloaded the maps obviously)This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Co-pilot is available for android for offline GPS. TomTom keeps saying it will release a version for android however they have been saying it for years without a release.
The problem with 7" tab is I dont think there are any window or vent mounts available, plus they probably block up a bit too much windscreen space; so I dont think they really make a good GPS devices.0 -
As has already been said the iPad mini only has GPS on the 3G version, the Nexus 7 has it on them all.
After that you can get Navfree for both Android and iOS which gives offline maps and routing (US version Android, iOS).
Some US states have strict laws on the size and placement on the windscreen and the operation of a satnav, so could be worth checking up on that.0 -
There is a vent mount for the nexus, about £7 on amazon.
Puts it in the middle of the car if you have a vent there, instead of on the windscreen.0 -

TomTom is now available for android - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tomtom.ukireland#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDIxMiwiY29tLnRvbXRvbS51a2lyZWxhbmQiXQ.. but the nexus 7 isn't on the compatible list (only approved for devices 800 x 480 pixels I think).
I've tried it out on my nexus 7 though and it all works ok apart from you current route being on the left of the screen (due to the higher screen resolution)
Hopefully it will be updated for more resolutions soon as I've always found TomTom to have all the features I need and easy to use.0 -
Nexus has google maps - 3g version out now.
Also if you went for the cheaper Nexus 7 without 3g - just sync with your phone.0 -
If you do get a Nexus 7 make sure that you're getting the new version that's just come out. The earlier model didn't have 3G.0

but not a good idea for going ot florida as it will incurr data roaming charges which are mental!
you'd be cheaper buying a tom tom and throwing it away than using data on you phone abroad (managed to ring up almost £300 of a bill while i was stranded in new york airport for a day last christmas)This is a system account and does not represent a real person.
