Which Book Keeping Software?

What is the preferred account keeping software for small business these days?

Sorry, I forgot to mention the word FREE. I have just started a new business and my income is very low. I used to use Quicken years ago but I find the cost of a Simplex "D" book to be quite expensive these days, let alone software packages.

I could do with going on a course for book keeping again as I am so out of touch with things. My ex wife used to look after my books years ago and so I know I am going to need some help.

Thanks.

  • Thats like asking how long is the piece of string! :)

A lot of people are going for Nav but I'd say Sage

Free to learn or free to use?
  • SAGE is not free though.
There are three types of people in this world. Those who can count and those who can't.
  • VTCashbook and GNU Cash are two applications that are free and ok. There are a few online providers too depending on how much you like the idea of the cloud/ SAAS etc
  • SAGE is not free though.
That's why I asked free to use or learn

You can get a trial version for both Nav and Sage. I'd go for Nav because it's popular and more advance than Sage. Only get the trial version if you want to learn, not use for profit.

But if you want something completely free to use, as in use for business, not just learn, then you're wasting your time here. Decent bookkeeping software are not free.
  • How long IS a piece of string? A fair question I suppose as I imagine some accounting software packages are more suitable than others, depending on the business. But I would imagine they all share common basics. I will only be running a simple door to door selling business.

I couldn't find NAV but if it's like SAGE it will be expensive and overkill.

I couldn't find much info on VT Cash, even on their website, but GNU Cash looks great.

I found another recommendation via Google: FreshBooks. This was reviewed as being free but the website says this is only a free trial.

Maybe GNU will be the one. Any other suggestions appreciated.

    Thanks all.

    .

then just keep a manual cashbook?

I think the OP needs something more sophisticated than that.
Even sole proprietors have to show clear accounts these days and it is much easier to organise if you use a package from day one.

I agree, the GNUcash looks good

Not sure about the free stuff. I liked the look of Solar Accounts. Just a one off payment, of £85 including VAT.

I have just been on a tour of this software and am thinking of buying it. it does pretty much everything I need. I would love to be able to ditch all the wierd and wonderful spreadsheets I currently have set up at the moment. I'll even give up chocolate for at least a week to contribute towards the quite modest cost of the software.

Has anyone else got any experience of this accounting package?
