Rendering cracks in a plinth

Hello,
wondering if someone can give some advice.
I have a few cracks in the front plinth of a terraced house:

I'd like them to be filled before the frost. I've put it up on mybuilder.com, but could anyone give me a few hints so I don't get ripped off?
I heard there is a special substance they should use within the cracks, though dodgy builders may use a cheaper one.
Or, would it be possible to do it oneself?

Thanks.

Dig the crack out and use sand and cement to fill them.
I would then paint it with something like Sandtex, i have done mine black.
