Bogus Call?

This morning my wife received the following telephone call...

An Asian gentleman - asked for my wife by name and said he was from the Electricity Company and as she had paid so promptly by Direct Debit, next month she would be entitled to a 40% discount.

He then said that they were sending out a meter which when plugged in would male all appliances lower energy ?? and would be sent to our address, which he recited. He then asked if she was a pensioner.

He then said he would just need to confirm the Bank where the Direct Debit was being paid from and he gave a few choices - My wife said he should know which Bank the Direct Debit was coming from - he said that he just had to confirm it - my wife said that she could not give any bank details over the phone - he said 'oh' and hung up.

Has anyone else experienced this conversation?

Kind regards
Bob

As a MoneySaving Stalwart, have you not already got one of these devices that makes all appliances lower energy?

We only have lower energy bulbs for lighting, nothing else, that we know about.

I have never heard of a meter that you can plug in to save energy, appliances yes, I have heard of a device to tell you how much is being used at anyone time.

Obviously a scam, just tell your friends etc to watch out for it. You could try to trace the number that called you and report it.

Sorry Peter I should have said in my post that I noticed that it was from an unavailable number.

A couple of months back, there was a thread here discussing a scam that IIRC sounded more or less exactly what you describe. Might be worth searching out?

And it sounds right she did exactly the right thing - If its anything important, your real supplier will write to you.

Was he asking for the bank details or the name of the bank the direct debit is set up with - that is a standard security question (obviously not if it involves the account number)

He was asking for the bank name and when my wife said no, he said 'oh' and hung up, far too abrupt to be 100% real we thought.
