Hills Vet Essentials Puppy - Changed??

Does anyone know if they have changed the recipe of Hills Vetenary Essentials Puppy dried food?

My pup has been eating it for 5 months now but recently I purchased a new bag and it appears to be more dry than previous and doesnt smell the same. He has refused to eat any of it despite all our attempts to get him to eat it. Tried buying a smaller bag from a different retailer (thinking that one might be stale) but its just the same and he refused to eat that too.

Moved him onto a different brand now and so far so good, but I wondered if they had changed the recipe.

Have you e-mailed Hills? Return the foods to the stores your purchased them from, if they refuse to take it back return it to Hills under their 100% satisfaction guarantee.

I did email them but they never answered the question, just spoke about the money back guarantee. Me thinks their lack of answer means they have changed the recipe and don't want to say.

Returned the smaller bag last night and got a refund. Unfortunately, we couldnt return the larger bag as we had poured the contents into a container and disposed of the bag! Won't be buying a large bag in future.
  • Are you sure he isn't just pushing your buttons to see if you reward him by changing the food? Older puppies tend to try this. Only way to know would be to keep putting the food down and stop all treats in the meantime.

We did think that but after a month of trying (and wasting a whole 10kg bag in trying), days on end with him not eating and him loosing weight as a result our vet suggested we try something different. He said it had been known for companies to change recipes enough to make them less palatable to dogs & cats and it appears this is what Hills have done.

Interestingly, on their website it says new, tastier recipe. Clearly not tastier to our dog!
