credit card no notification of payment bounced back! now late payment charge!

My house of fraser credit card bill came through and was due on the 1st november.....i paid it in full online on the 22nd Oct but unbeknown to me the payment came back into my account the next day, no notification from my bank or the credit card.

So there was me thinking id paid my bill and while i was away for the weekend my mum gets a call on the 3rd Nov at home asking to speak to me......i check online and discover the issue call up today now im home (the 5th) and paid it in full.

ive now been told my next bill will show late payment charges when i was led to believe I'd paid my bill and i would have to wait till I got my new bill to complain. Is this right can they charge me when there was no notification that the money was sent bk to my account???? Now im worried this will affect my credit rating when ive never had an issue before!

  • I'm afraid it is entirely your responsibility to ensure that payment has reached it's destination.

Do you know why it was returned? Do you have a copy of your transfer notification?

I can only suggest that you contact House of Fraser again; explain nicely what happened and beg them not to add the late payment charge. Send them a copy of your bank statement if necessary and admit that you should have realised the money had come back to your account but you didn't.

If your account is normally in perfect order then they may be prepared to waive the late payment fee as a gesture of goodwill.

If this is the first time you've had a late payment, and your account is normally managed properly, the bank will often write off the charge. Be nice though, it is a gesture of goodwill, not a 'right' ;)

  • Im gonna have to wait till i get my next statement through...its the first time ive ever had an issue but as far as i knew the bill was paid.... the money actually left my account! no reason given as to why it was repaid into my account but it shows as two transactions on my statement on two days. I wont be paying online anymore i dont trust the system im just gonna pay instore.

Have you paid this way before? ie were you using 'saved payee' details?

If not, maybe you forgot to include a reference (ie you used just sort code and collection account number and not the card number), or simply mis-typed the reference number? Either of these could have resulted in your payment being returned because they wouldn't know where to allocate it.

If you fail to get any goodwill over the phone, it might be a good idea to include a copy of your bank statement with any subsequent formal complaint letter.

If their systems are found to be at fault then you shouldn't just look at the monetary outcome...you need to ensure that any late payment markers have been removed/are not applied to your credit files with the CRAs.
