Grout between window board and window frame?

I moved into a house 2 years ago. There was a lot of dodgy DIY of which I'll fitting plastic window boards was one.

I want to now fit painted wood ones. Currently the plastic window boards are cut badly do font touch the window frame. Previous owner has used trim and sealant to cover gap.

What do I put between the wooden window board and the upvc window frame. Is it a couple of mm of grout. I notice that my patents have a hard white substance between board and frame.

Many thanks,
C

Also, if someone can point me in the direction of advice/tutorial on fitting window boards that would be great. I am just assuming to cut into walls at sides, slot board in and stick diwn with something like 'no more nails'?

I had some fitted, They cut into the walls at the side, then inserted the boards with some packing underneath, and then filled the void with expanding foam stuff. Once set, they patched the plaster under the boards. The gap between the uPVC frame was filled with silicone sealant. It was poor, so I had to remove it, and redo it. Also some bits of foam were sticking out of the plaster, so I had to dig them out, and patch the plaster patch. I would not use grout as that does not allow for movement.

  • Thanks. It's strange the material filling the gap at my parents is definitely hard and not a sealant.

Its probably filler of some description. It won't be grout.

    Decorator's caulk?
  • I have used car filler (isopon 38) to fill such gaps. Can be sanded to lovely smooth finish and undetectable once painted !
  • I will check out decorators caulk. Thanks everyone.
  • In my experience filling the gap between a PVCu window and a wooden sill board is tricky because of the higher rate of expansion of the window. If you're going to paint or stain them whatever you do don't use silicon sealant as the paint will peel or flake off. Many so-called professional window fitters are a bit too free and easy with it for my liking. Decorators caulk is prone to shrink as it ages and will pull away from the PVCu window. I fill the gap to just below the top of the sill board (not difficult as it shrinks as it dries), this way shrinkage isn't so obvious as when you apply a thick "bead" of sealant.
