CRT artefact - A signal the end is in sight?

I have an hitachi 14inch crt which I have been keeping faith with for a decade and a half. I only intend to replace it when it finally gives up the ghost and I am wondering if the countdown has finally begun.
Since yesterday I have noticed a dead pixel like green artefact at the top of the screen. It was about 1mm x 5mm and in the shape of an elongated oval.
At the moment it is a bit irritating but I can easily live with it, however if it started to grow to 3 or 4 times it's current size then I might have to start shopping around for a new tv. Could this be a sign the phosphor is starting to burnout?

  • Could be something wrong with the degaussing equipment. Not sure its worth fixing if it is.

Make sure you have nothing magnetic next to/close to that area, eg. speakers, magnet, metal toy, phone, etc.
  • Long live CRT! I've never seen a TV in a showroom with a sharper picture.

I intend to run it into the ground as anything but minor repairs will probably be uneconomic. I don't have any magnetic equipment nearby and the shape looks quite sharp not warped so I am ruling that out as a cause.
Finally, I agree with Kernal Sanders in that I prefer the picture from a CRT than one from an LCD.
