Where to get wood in bham for shelves?

We want to make our own shelves and paint them different colours as cant stand the veneered or lacquered ones that you find everywhere.
Does anyone know where I can find the wood that would be suitable for this in Birmingham or the midlands? And if I need to treat it/use anything on it first before we stain/paint it?
