DLA High rate Care

I have been awarded High rate care componet and low rate mobility componet, My wife is also disabled she gets the high rate mobility componet but no care componet. We have two children 17 and 13. My wife gets server disablement allowance and I get Esa. Iam just wondering who I have to let know about being awarded DLA and is there any extra help we could be entitled to?

Thankyou

It is possible that she (or one of your children) may be able to claim either carers allowance, or an increased amount of benefit, due to caring.
  • I dont know, My son and wife do care for me expecially during the night my son is at college.

Depending on your son's course, he may be entitled to claim CA for looking after you. It can't be a full time course i.e. less than 21 hours per week. Would also depend on his personal circumstances:

"You might get Carer’s Allowance if you:

    - are 16 or over
    - spend at least 35 hours a week caring for someone
    - have been in the UK or the Isle of Man for at least 26 weeks in the -12 months before you claim
    - are in the UK when you claim - there are some exceptions, eg -members and family members of the Armed Forces
    - aren’t subject to immigration control

You may not get Carer’s Allowance if:

    - you’re in full-time education, and studying for 21 hours a week or more (this includes supervised study and things like coursework and experiments, not just time spent with a tutor)
    - you earn more than £100 a week (after tax)"

If somebody will not be claiming CA for looking after you, you may be entitled to a severe disablement premium paid (SDP) as part of your ESA (if this is income related) or Housing Benefit. To check if you are entitled to the SDP possibly give ESA a call.

Going back to the original post. I honestly can't answer but wonder if this may provide any advice?

  • You need to notify ESA (as an EDP may be payable if not already paid).

He won't be entitled to the SDP as he does not live alone. If his wife also received MRC or HRC then they would both be entitled to it, unless someone claimed Carer's allowance for them.

Only for as long as it takes for PIP to come round from next Autumn!!!

Don't rely in getting the equivalent award - plan what you would do if you both lost it.
