Going through a re-structure but inappropriate questions asked?

My current role has been placed "at risk" and my current role is going to be changed ( and upskilled) and I have to apply for a role in the new structure. My boss has had individual one to one with each team member. During my 121 he asked - why I worked 4 days a week? Was that in my contract? How old are my children? Would childcare arrangements affected me going to London 1 days a week ( current work location is south coast) . He also asked me if I considered voluntary redundancy - to which my reply was no. After speaking to other members of the team I found he has asked all the women about their personal lives in terms of do they have children, why they work part time yet not one male member of the team was asked such personal questions. The ladies in my team are too afraid to go to HR as they feel if we complained about him this could go against us in the selection process. The ladies in my team are all very concerned that he will manage to get rid of the "working mums" or "part timers" using the fact we are "unskilled" for the new roles as an excuse. Do we have any come back???

If you are not in a union then get proper advice elsewhere but if you are (or one of the other women are) then ask them but I would say that as a group you are stronger than as individuals and you all need to stick up for your rights.
The manager is treading on very dangerous groundsDon't trust a forum for advice. Get proper paid advice. Any advice given should always be checked0 -
Sounds like the manager is discrimminating against you which is NOT allowed.
Take Union advice (if you have one and are a member).0 -
are there part time men in your department?
what I'm trying to get at, is it women he is asking these questions of, or part time workers.
there is a big difference between the two.0 -
If you only ask of part time employees, it can be considered indirect sex discrimination, as more women than men work part time hours.0

it does sound a bit fishy...my guess is your bosses already have it outlined in their heads about whom is going to take the new position that they have created. its just a matter of formalities now to put in place who they want. (horrible i know but thats how they operate). pointless going to HR because they will no doubt be in on it aswell.0

If the new role cannot be supported on part time hours, or cannot support flexible working, it is fully relevant and not discriminatory, as long as every part timer is subject to the same investigation.
