Hand held vacuum cleaner

Hi,

I'm wondering if someone can recommend a small , light , effective hand held vacuum cleaner.

When cleaning out my log burner , I seem to manage to drop small bits of bark. Rather than drag out the Hoover it would be lovely to find a portable one that has good suction.

Thank you in advance

Di

The Bissell Pet Hair Eraser is absolutely fab (use it with the normal nozzle if not picking up hair) http://www.bisselldirect.co.uk/pet-hair-eraser-hand-vac

It's been on offer for around £20 in lots of places recently so should find it cheaper than RRP.
  • Do you want a corded one or rechargable battery ? If the latter I have have been using the Black & Decker "Dustbuster" for hoovering out the grate and it is pretty good , all except for the on-off switch which is a right bustard.

A dustbuster is okay for light dust, and the odd job, but useless for anything more. A kitchen fitter who came round had a Dyson handheld. He said it was great, so I bought one. It is great. Only 15 minutes charge, but it is so convenient compared to a normal hoover, and so useful for odd corners, small areas of mess, cobwebs, tiled kitchen floor and so on. I hate getting the hoover (actually a Dyson) out, with its long cable, and heavy bulky presence. I've ordered a second battery for the handheld.

I have the Dyson DC35 which is the hand held but with a long pipe so can also be used as a normal cleaner too. I love mine apart from the fact it runs out so quickly. I hadn`t realised you could buy spares batteries but will definitely get one.

Leif, did you buy your spare battery from Dyson or elsewhere? I would like to get one but £50  is a bit expensive but I am wary of cheaper copies maybe not being so good.

Yes, from Dyson, it has not yet arrived, I ordered it yesterday. They are lithium-ion, and are always expensive. I would never buy a third party one unless it had a respected brand name on it, as Li-ion batteries are potentially very dangerous. There are cases of third party ones causing a house fire, or exploding. Basically Li-ion batteries need complex electronics to prevent them fully discharging, or being overcharged, which would cause an explosion.

£50 is a lot, but I think it will be worth it, since I am lazy. :D

Most hand-held "dustbusters" are fairly weak.

I bought the de Walt- it's rather tougher and more capable. It takes the same 18v batteries as my drill, so I always have fresh ones available.

It's also heavier & bigger, so not ideal for everyone.

    Dear All,

Wow-some great suggestions but as I only want to use it for the fire ash..I think I'm going for "anotherbaldrick's" suggestion.

Many thanks again for all your help
