Excel query on sorting data

I'm trying to sort a long list of items which appear across several columns. I know I can select a column and then do the sort A-Z button and click to expand the selection but it doesn't seem to like cells which have nothing in them. I could go through and type an X in these cells but it'll take ages (there's about 5000 lines
). Does anyone know of a quick way to either keep all the lines together (including those empty cells in the correct column) or a quick way to search for blank cells and add an X (or something similar?). As you can see, I'm just a very average user of Excel!!! Thanks for reading.

It's very easy to add an X to all blank cells but that wouldn't be a sensible option.
You should select the whole spreadsheet, by click the top left corner, and use the sort option (not the A-Z button but the sort button) to choose which column to sort the information. Blanks shouldn't be a problem.0 -
To the left of column A and above row1, there is a n empty square, press the square, Then do the data sort thing - I only use excel at work and dont have here, so apologies for being vague0
