Recommended Local Tradesmen

We've just moved to a different part of the country and have no idea who to use for a plumber, and we don't know anybody yet to be able to ask for recommendations.

Is there a website that gives recommended tradesmen do you know? Preferably one that only includes reputable and accredited?

If anyone can point us in the right direction we'd be extremely grateful! Many thanks.

  • Hi there

    You can use http://www.mybuilder.com

This allows you to post what type of work you want done and local tradesmen will contact you to quote. There are also reviews for each one

But neither of these are recommended tradesmen. They are simp,y tradesmen that pay fees to be on the site. It's no different from sticking a pin in yellow pages.

Ask neighbours and work colleagues. Don't bother with those sites.

The advice I got on here was to look in neighbourhood for trades vans and ask a neighbouring trades-person. This worked really well and I have now a great gas engineer and plumber who also recommended a local electrician. I now feel smugly confident that if I need something done I will get a fair price.

In Derbyshire we have this http://www.derbyshire.gov.uk/community/trusted_trader/default.asp

I have used a tiler and a decorator from them, does your council do something similar?

join which? for a £1 trial period and then you get access to which?local where local trades people are recommended by which? members

The problem with the other sites here is that anyone can put themselves on and make up some reviews. This can't happen with which? as which? make no £ from this site - unlike checkatrade or my builder who charge trades people and customers to use the sites

Where in the UK are you? Perhaps an MSE member might be able to give you a recommendation.
