Annual Leave and Tax codes

Two quick questions:
Typically, are there restrictions on how you book annual leave? Can you book a bunch of Fridays off for example?
Also how do you go about getting your tax code stuff sorted out? I don't want to be on emergency tax or any of that rubbish, is there something I must do?

There may be and there may not be you will have to ask where you work about holiday you can book but they can refuse any dates you request.
Re the Tax code, get the number from work from your payroll dept of the ta office and give them a call.
Or did you hand in a P45 when you started or signed a p46? How long have you been there?0 -
Thanks for the info sarah, I got the job offer on Friday and start on Monday. I dont have the forms you mentioned.
previously I was on IB-JSA.0 -
Income based JSA? You will get a P45 and you hand that in to work.xsupercarlx wrote: »Thanks for the info sarah, I got the job offer on Friday and start on Monday. I dont have the forms you mentioned.

Yeah, income based, okay thanks, hopefully I'll get it sooner rather than later.0

The other alternative, which will sort your tax code out quicker is when you go into work ask for a p46, which they should be able to download. Fill it in as soon as you can and give it back to your new employer.
The quicker it happens, the quicker your tax will be sorted.
As for holidays, it is entirely up to your company as to holidays allowed.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -

Actually, you probably do want to be on the emergency tax code, as this would give you a tax free allowance, what you don't want is to be on 0T which would mean that you would pay 20% tax on everything. 0T is used when no P45 or P46 is handed in. As you probably don't have your P45 yet, you will need to complete a P46 (your employer should give you one, or you can download one from HMRC). If you tick box B (if this is now your only taxable income) then you will be put on the emergency tax code 810L on a week 1 / month 1 basis.Quidco cashback paid out so far £745.89 :j0 -
Regarding your holidays, your employer can decide when you take your holidays if they wish but most companys let you book them to suit you and the business.Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.0

Hopefully the company will give you all the information you need at an early stage: as well as how to book leave you also need to know when the leave year starts and ends - sometimes it runs from your first day, but I think more commonly it starts on a particular date. Ours starts from 1st Jan, so if you were joining us you'd have about 4 days worth to use, but we'd probably require you to take it all over the Christmas closure period.
And we definitely wouldn't let anyone book off a whole bunch of Fridays: everyone wants to not work Fridays!Signature removed for peace of mind0 -

Often restrictions are that you can't book leave until you have accrued it. So to get 2 days you usually have to have worked the first month. If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.0 -

That's very unusual, otherwise you would never be able to use all of your annual leave entitlement!
I've booked 2 weeks off next July and that isn't even in the current holiday year, which ends on 31st March!British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0
