Joint account

My girlfriend and I are looking into getting a joint account to pay our shared rent money into and a few other expenses. Would anyone recommend the best deal for someone who doesn't want to completely switch but will be depositing over £1000 a month into a new account?

All of the £100 bonuses seem to only work if you switch all of your direct debits and directly pay wages into the account, which we wouldn't want to do.

Any help much appreciated!

Any bank will do joint accounts, and no bank can/will force you to close your existing accounts.

You need to be certain that you want to be financially linked. As soon as you have a joint account, your credit files will show a link.

So which do you want to do, grab a £100 switching bonus, or open a joint account?

Maybe you would prefer £15/month instead? (Halifax)

A better idea might be for one of you to pay the rent, and the other to transfer their half into that account. If you can't trust them to do that, then its not going to be much of a relationship. Like innovate says, joint accounts will show up on both of your credit files.
  • Thanks guys.

We'd prefer a joint account to put rent money into and some savings, but with the maximum rewards available - we both have good credit so I'm not concerned about being financially linked!

Well as they say, you can't have everything. The banks only want to give the incentives to switch because they want your business which they get more of by you switching. If you don't want to switch, fair enough, but you can't expect to get the same bonuses as if you did.

I'm not criticising as I can see why you'd want to get the most you can, but in reality you aren't going to get the best bonuses if you aren't going to switch, so you'll have to ignore switching incentives and go for the best account for your ongoing needs.
