Your IE settings are going through a uni proxy server? http://wwwcache.bris.ac.uk:8080

There's a lot of bloat running, most of the O4's

right clicking on your wireless ssid, and doing status should show your wireless speed

do a wired and wireless speed test http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/speedtest.swf and post the results

how much ram has this machine got?

speedtest is download speed, clicking on the network name and then status will tell you the wireless speed between the router and laptop as you move around the house. These will give an indication of signal strength and what else may be interfering

    http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider/

is everything going through that proxy, are your other browsers using it?

O4's are things starting with O4 in your hijackthis log, ie things loading at startup, ie bloat, also many updaters/rapport etc running

i would assume that too and would work on changing the channels but all other devices work completely fine it's just this laptop
All other devices????? If you are jammed by and old microwave oven/house alarm, wireless video sender etc., can obliterate the wifi band, rather than one channel, and it will not show up (unless it somebody purposefully sending wifi) on your laptop even with vistumbler, netstumbler, inssider, kismet, or sirrus etc. Have you bought a new piece of it? To track it you need a directional arial and a spectrum analyser (too expensive to hire)

i can't move this laptop that much because it's really delicate - it's so old it won't operate without being plugged in
I guarantee pubs and friends will have mains sockets, because I use them too :)

nope, it's only a wifi issue, on the cable it's something like 28mb
Well this sort of proves it is not really a spyware issue, and is one of a few things wifi card, drivers, router, someone corrupting your signal by either wifi or bespoke device. You could try a linux boot disk an see if it is drivers and windows.

On personal note. I live in a flat and had the very similar trouble as you. Some days I got 15Meg, other days 35k - slower than dailup. Gone through all what you are going through, even tried another router. I had 3 ways forward (1) go onto 5GHz network (2) net plugs/powerline adapters (3) long network cable (4) find the car - but that would have not been legal :)
    I opted for (2)
