Any mac experts?

I have 2010 imac, it was stuck on the white screen.

So far I have tried

-safe boot, it boots to a blue screen then hangs
-resetting SMC
-resetting NVRAM/PRAM
-used the installation disk to get to disk utility, in here the HDD is highlighted and can be selected, but the 'macintosh HD' is greyed out. I have tried repair disk and left it running over night, this morning it was still running!

Any more ideas, I do have a backup, but I know it isn't the most recent, so would like to try and recover the data first?

Thanks

If you've tried disk repair and disk utilities, then it would appear that your hard drive has failed.
Unfortunately there is little point in having a physical backup if you don't keep it up to date, at least weekly. But do you not have an auto backup via Time Machine?

Is your iMac on the list for a free hard disk replacement even when out of warranty?
For this you'll need to check the serial number, should be on a sticker on the original box + maybe on rear of the iMac

Okay thanks. Yes it is eligible for free replacement, I'd already booked it in!

Yes, I realise now the importance of regular backups now!

Is there a way to recover the data?

The S/N can be found via Apple Menu>About This Mac.
Once the drive has been removed you can put it it a USB hard drive caddy (a suitable 3.5" one), reconnect it to your own repaired Mac (or another one) and see if you can read any data off it. Worth a try anyway, as the caddy only costs a few pounds. However I wouldn't hold out too many hopes if it couldn't be read by the methods you've already tried.
Failing that, forensic data recovery may get some of it back, but you are looking at a starting cost of about £350.
