Storecupboard use up - crackerbread ideas?

Options
Hey everyone. Given the wealth of knowledge on this board I'm hoping someone can assist me in my storecupboard use-up.

I've managed remarkably well so far and have managed to make what seemed like odds and sods of nothing in the cupboards stretch 3 weeks with very few additions (last night's effort was a homemade pizza topped with a beefburger - honestly I squashed the beefburger up and mixed in some fajita seasoning from an open packet, fried it off while keeping it chopped up and it made a crumbled spicy beef topping - delicious!)

Anyway, I digress. I'm having trouble with one item in particular - crackerbreads. Following numerous failed attempts to eat low fat food (failed because I realised low fat food is a con), I've been left with two almost full boxes of crackerbreads which I'm loathe to just throw away.

Given their rather feeble texture I doubt they'd work well as, say, a cheesecake base and since I didn't eat them in the first place then simply eating them with toppings on can be ruled out.

Any ideas anyone?

blitz into bread crumbs and use to coat fish, chicken, fishcakes, top of cottage pie, fish pie etc.
I was going to suggest savory cheesecake till I read your post.

Could they be made into crumbs with a food processor for toppings or coatings? Do you have any items in your cupboard / fridge / freezer which would be improved with a crunchy layer? As crumbs, they would probably freeze for later use.

I crumble one or two up to use instead of bread with soup, and another one crumbled into a quiche or ommelette

  • I echo what others have said and would crush them and use them to coat chicken, fishcakes and the like, stir in paprika, garlic flakes or all purpose seasoning to taste
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

Thanks for the suggestions. It had crossed my mind to use them as a kind of crumb but I was hoping to use them up without having to buy anything extra (we've run out of meat of all description with the exception of 5 beefburgers).

When blitzed they're a very fine light powder, I wonder if I could use them in something baked, perhaps added to flapjack or something?

Another vote for turning them into crumbs, use to top cauliflower cheese, leeks in cheese sauce or mix with some grated cheese and use to top stuffed mushrooms, tomatoes or onions.
I dont think they would hurt if you used them to add to a crumble either.

  • Could you not break them into bits and cover in melted chocolate like rice crispies? I don't think there is much that can't be improved with the addition of chocolate!;)

I wonder if you could crumble them up, then use them to make something like matzo balls for soup?
  • how about crumbing them, adding some to the beefburgers, with more egg if needed to bind, to make them stretch further, and remoulding into burgers, or just crumbing them and throwing some into chillis, bolognaises, omlettes, quiches, flapjacks, stuffings... they would go a bit soggy i think so i'd not try a cheesecake base, expect it'd be 'damp' if you tried....

    good luck
