My mum's 65th birthday is fast-approaching, but I'm lost for ideas on this occasion. I'm hoping that I might get some good advice on this board.

Material things are not required, she's got everything she wants and doesn't need any more things. Flowers are the norm, she doesn't much like eating out (like me she's a critical cook!) nor is a big drinker, and in the past I've booked her on holidays abroad, which she's loved, especially cruises. The problem is she's due to have surgery, no date yet but recovery is likely to take several months; I want to give her something that will be appreciated now. A day at the spa / beauticians is an obvious answer, but its been done before.

Nothing is expected but I don't want the day to pass w/o doing something special for her. Any ideas?

My 2 girls gave me a digital photo frame for my 60th birthday. They had scanned a pile of our old photos, some from before they were even born (OMG how long OH's hair and beard use to be!!! :rotfl: ), and loaded them into its memory. Total surprise! :j :) It also has slots for USB stick and flash cards, so can put those in with more recent photos to run as a slide show, while still leaving the original ones intact in its memory. I'm assuming your Mum would be recovering from surgery at home, so she might enjoy new flash cards with more recent pictures after her op? So it would be a gift that kept on giving. Prices of digital photo frames have come down a lot now compared to what they were when they first came out too, as have the various camera cards and USB sticks.

Please, can I piggy-back on this one?

I have a friend about to turn 65. He retired a couple of years back, so altho I can find plenty of funny tee-shirts etc about retirement, I really want something specifically 65 related.- a national guide to pensioners discounts would be good :D if there is such a thing , but other ideas are welcome. £10 - £15 ish budget for this.
I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say. :)

There are some entertaining books for 'older' people, plus you can get cards with a CD in from the year of their birth.
