    No they cannot, put everything clearly in writing to them and keep copies. Set out The discussion and the fact that you made it clear that you have not given notice, you intend to remain employed by them until they make you redundant. I would see if you could get some free advice with a Solicitor as well. If they try and terminate you based on the discussion I would say you have an unfair dismissal claim, which is why you need to try and see a solicitor.
