Smell from Washing Machine.

Hi.
I know there was a thread on here about this but I can't find it,so if anyone can help that would be great.
A friend of mine is having problems with her washing machine. There is a smell everytime she does a wash, and it smells like sewers. The clothes are ok they don't smell. From memory someone said to clean the inside of the door after every wash but if there is any other solutions to this problem would be grateful for them...By the way she does not use her draw to put wash liquid in,she always uses the ball inside the wash.

Thanks..

You need to stick some old towels in it, a cup of Washing Soda in with the towels (not the draw) and run a boil wash. It's a build up of bacteria in the machine due to too many low temperature washes. You may need to do this a couple of times, and add a couple of caps of Zoflora to the fabric conditioner draw. This will solve the problem.

Tell her to run the machine on boil wash, with a handful of Washing Soda with NOTHING in it (no clothes; towels). Turn the spin off.

When not in use the drawer should be opened slightly and the door left open. Before doing the wash above it might be an idea to remove the drawer and make sure it's clean (no black mould). More than likely, though, if it's usually used at low (30 deg) temps then a bacterial 'soup' will have built up. Check and empty the filter, too.

Once a week do a washload at a higher temp - eg towels at 60 deg; this will prevent a re-occurrence.

  • Carry out a hot wash (70 degrees or above) with powder detergent every 6 weeks. If you have no reason to wash at this high a temperature then run a cottons 95 degree programme with detergent but no laundry every 3 months. For this I buy the cheapest biological powder I can find. I normally use a powder for sensative skin for washing so I keep this just for this purpose and OH's handkerchefs.

After every wash I dry the inside of the machine and remove water from the inside of the seal, clean and dry the soap dispenser. I also leave the door open to air the machine

There are products you can buy Dr Beckmanns products for cleaning a machine. Can't comment on how good they are as I haven't used them
  • Thanks everyone, I will tell her to try it..
  • done a few of these either the trap on your internal pipe ,,,water has stagnated in the machine flex or sediment in your out side drain and the smell is coming up the pipe work (normally the last one

Leave the door open to air the machine.

Liquid detergents can cause nasty smells and they also corrode the internals of the machine, use washing powder instead.
  • The issue these days with washing machines and detergents are the recommendations to wash at low temperatures.

The downside is that the low temperature doesnt kill off all the bacteria etc and so the machine can end up getting smelly.

I tend to run a high temperature / cotton wash every 3 months or so with an affresh cleaning tablet and no clothes. This keeps the washing machine nice and clean.

The same is recommended for dishwashers.
