Acer laptop will only turn on when battery is out

Hi there

Tried to turn my Acer laptop on this morning but nothing! It did charge up however. So took the battery out and powered up with the charger and it booted up. Clearly not ideal for a long term solution so anyone got any thoughts on a longer term solution? Battery dead maybe?

Thanks for any help.

I'm not familiar with Acer, but was there any message about the battery not being recognized or anything at all?

I have the same problem with an ancient Advent laptop. Undoubtedly its battery is dead from great age - how old is your Acer laptop?

It may be Acer's way of telling you to buy a new battery?!

Try this - (with the battery removed)

Windows 7 has built-in functionality to monitor the health of the battery. As batteries degrade over time, Windows 7 shows a message to replace the battery when it detects that the battery is performing at 40% of its original capacity.
If you receive this message but your battery is working as usual, the notification is displayed in error and there is no need to take action. If you want to disable the message, please use the following steps:
    1. Click the battery icon while it displays a red cross.
    2. Disable the option: Warn me if my battery may need replacement.

do you mean computer wont start if battery is in and power cable is pugged in too?
or do you mean it just wont boot with only the battery present?

This article has some interesting advice.
Look to the bottom 3 paragraphs.
I have used it to rejuvenate a battery for my old acer lappy and can run for about 2 hours now instead of the 10 minutes it managed before .

Thanks for your replies(and the link)

I'm now after some (free) way of monitoring (if at all) the health of the battery - how long i've got left before needing to buy another. Most bits of software simply show the usage remaining (which Windows does anyway)

    Thanks
