No-car lanes

Hi everyone,

Be aware, I'm about to be very vague regarding the details I give and the advice I require ha but I've just had to pick my friend up from work in newcastle city centre... On my way I got very confused by the road system and on a number of occasions strayed into no-car lanes and even momentarily strayed onto the wrong side of the road  thinking it was a one way system (the same as the previous stretch of road) ... Don't worry though, it wasn't as bad as it sounds as it was very quiet and I would have made sure to pull over if I was in any way endangering others... Anyway, I noticed a sign on one stretch of road saying the no-car lane was in effect from 7am until 7pm... But I'm not sure about the rest of the roads... I understand that you won't be able to give me any clear cut facts but general opinions would be nice... So do you think I will be subject to any council penalties, do no car lanes usually have cameras and do you think the 7am 7pm rule would be in effect everywhere?.... Thanks for any opinions I get :) ... Also, I stopped for about 45 seconds in a disabled area to get my bearings (engine still running)... Any need to worry on that front? Thanks!

If you were in an area you shouldn't have been AND there were operational cameras, then you (if the registered keeper of the vehicle) will probably get a letter shortly. If you don't hear anything, you got away with it!

Yeah that's what I'm thinking, just looking for anyone with any local knowledge of the area if you like. Just to save to whole waiting game ha. I'm hoping that the no-car lanes are all 7am until 7pm because then I would no for sure but I don't if the time zone applies to all :(

Have you looked at the Council website, surely the no-car lanes are mentioned there?

Sorry I am from the Brighton area and have never been that far North! :D

  • I often drive in Newcastle and think that the No Car Lanes are from 7am to 7pm. I don't think there are cameras and I have gone into them before because it is often difficult to go straight on if you stay in the car lane. I am thinking about the bus only lanes going from the centre of Newcastle into Byker in particular.

Thanks for the responses guys! Yeah I'll check the website, I did do a little googling and found a Northumbria police response suggesting that they only fine people who they catch using officers, implying that they don't use cameras but its dated a while back... Also, I'm hoping that all of the lanes are 7to 7 because ill be fine if that's the case :) god, the whole system just annoys me generally because I know it's my fault but there's no need to make the whole road system so confusing. It could be much easier! Thanks anyway! :)
