Can anyone recommend a procedure or product to treat sanded pine prior to painting/staining please? I made a bad mistake 3 years ago when building bookshelves and the knots bled through the gloss paint ! This time I want to get it right.

Unless the Knots have been pre-treated you must use a knotting solution prior to painting.
You can buy it in any DIY store, and there are two types, one is the colour of tea, and the other one is clear.
If you are painting then either one will do, as the number of paint coats you will do will cover any stain.
Get some kitchen roll or an old little brush, and dab on every knot, even dab an inch either way of the knot.
This will dry in about 30-60 mins, then you can prime, its better to use oilbase products on new/bare wood, and if in the future you want to freshen the doors up you can use water base paint.
After you have primed (oilbase), when dry give a rub down, then apply at least 2 undercoats, (oilbase), if going with gloss as a top coat, you might have to do 3, depending on the coverage of the undercoat.
Then apply your gloss, if going with satinwood or eggshell, do 2 U/C and 2 satin/eggshell, gently rub down between coats.
You dont have to do 2 satin/eggshell, its up to the individual, but if they are new doors and you want a professional finish,it will be worth the extra coat.:D0
